Our Story

At the heart of our work is the Kia Mau Charitable Trust, the legal entity and foundation that allows us to build sustainable pathways for our people. But the pulse of our mahi is Kia Mau Talent.

The name "Kia Mau Talent" isn't just a brand, it’s an acknowledgment of a profound truth: every rangatahi and whānau we work with possesses at least one unique talent. Our role is to provide the space where they can remember that talent, refine it, and use it as a tool to improve life for themselves, their whānau, and their wider communities.

The Spark Behind Kia Mau Talent

Kia Mau Talent was created from a simple but powerful belief, that rangatahi and whānau hold incredible potential when given the right environment to grow. We recognised a vital need for spaces where whānau and rangatahi could:

  • Build Confidence: Finding the inner strength to stand tall.
  • Strengthen Cultural Identity: Grounding themselves in who they are and where they come from.
  • Explore Leadership: Stepping into roles that influence and inspire others.
  • Develop Life Skills: Gaining practical tools in ways that feel empowering and relevant.

What began as a vision has grown into a vibrant ecosystem of programmes, workshops, and events. By bringing together community, education, and opportunity, we are dedicated to unlocking potential and shaping strong, resilient futures for the next generation.

Our Moemoeā

Kia Mau Talent exists to support Māori to share their gifts in ways that positively impact their communities and the wider world.

Our moemoeā is grounded in the belief that when rangatahi are supported to understand who they are, where they come from, and what they are capable of, they are better equipped to navigate education, careers, and life with confidence.

How we mahi

We operate as a facilitator and connector.

Rather than delivering one-size-fits-all programmes, we work alongside communities to co-design learning experiences that reflect local context, strengths, and needs.

Who we mahi alongside

We collaborate with:

- Rangatahi and whānau
- Industries/Businesses
- Education Provider
- Community organisations
- Iwi, hapū, councils, and funders

We often work at the intersection of these groups to strengthen pathways and shared understanding.

The people behind the kaupapa

Led by facilitators and collaborators who are deeply connected to community, youth, and place.
